What we think…
This stone farmhouse has been beautifully restored retaining many original features including chestnut beams and terracotta floors throughout.  There are several patios and a lovely pergola around the house making it a perfect house for a large group. It is located in an interesting area both for its beautiful countryside and also because of its proximity to the birthplace of the world renowned artist Michelangelo Buonarroti at Caprese Michelangelo (only 5 kms away).  The layout of this house makes it ideal for one, two or even three families holidaying together or perhaps several generations of the same family enjoying a family get together.

Inside
One of the wonderful things about Casa Alessia is that every room has amazing views of the surrounding countryside.  Each room has two or more windows so that you are never short of breathtaking vistas.

Casa Alessia  is accessed by two large French doors that open onto the patio to the front of the villa. The patio is covered by a pergola and provides a shady area for dining al fresco. To the left of the patio is a wood oven and a stand alone BBQ.  Through the french doors you enter into the old cow barn which has been converted into a spacious dining room with a large granite dining table seating 10, and then through to the kitchen.  Inside the kitchen, great care has been taken to ensure that Casa Alessia has a warm homely feel.  The kitchen is well equipped and has a hob, oven, large fridge/freezer and dishwasher. The kitchen is a blend of the modern with the charm and feel of the passage of time.  Terracotta flooring and wooden units provide easy to clean surfaces.  From the kitchen you can access a small courtyard with table and chairs for breakfasts in the warm morning sun.

Off the kitchen is a hallway with stairs leading to the first and second floors. There is a washing machine in a large under stairs cupboard.  From the opposite side of the kitchen on the ground floor is the "Garden” bedroom with a pretty iron double bed and stable doors opening onto the kitchen patio and villa gardens. The bathroom is en-suite and has a spacious corner bath with a wall mounted shower in the bath.

The gated stairs lead to the first floor where there are two twin bedrooms,  a further double bedroom and a family sitting room which is an ideal place to relax and read books, play games or chill out in front of the large TV.  A large stone fireplace provides a dramatic focal point for those cooler months which you can enjoy whilst sitting on the comfortable sofa and chairs.

A further floor upstairs houses the master bedroom with a stunning 4 poster bed and spacious bathroom with large walk in shower and marble sink.  The bedroom has two beautiful arched windows which overlook the garden with views into the surrounding countryside.

Parent Points: This is a very old property.  There are low level windows on the first floor which need to be kept latched.  The stairs are stone but have stair gates fitted.  Generally on one floor there are two or three steps between various rooms but they are not steep and only provide access between rooms.  There is a sunken bath in the ensuite bathroom off the first floor bedroom; parents may want to keep the door shut to prevent little ones falling in.

Outside
As you get closer to the house you get a real sense of adventure.  The house stands alone in 3 acres of terraced hillside with breathtaking views of Lake Montedoglio and  the Upper Tiber Valley.  There are no nearby roads or traffic to worry about, the gardens are a mix of lawns and terraces with toys for children to play with and an enclosed pool for adults and children to enjoy.  The pool is fenced with a grassy terraced area for children to play nearby should they not want to swim.  The access is by Roman steps, so easy for little ones to enter or just get their toes wet.

There is a large grassy area which can be used for ball games and you could even have a nearly full size pitch for football.   Nearby is a shady area which provides ample parking for 3 or more cars.

There are 3 large patios on which to dine.  The main one is adjacent to the dining area and has great shade, barbeque and an old woodburing oven.  Below, stone-walled terraced fields and hazelnut orchards lead down to wild grass and flower meadows with olive, cypress and walnut trees.

Parent Point: There is a steep drop from the terraces outside the dining room so it would be advisable to supervise children whilst playing.

And beyond
There are some amazing places to visit.  As the birthplace of Michelangelo, you must visit the 13th Century church of St John the Baptist where he was baptised as well as the Michelangelo museum and library.

The surrounding hillside towns and villages provide plenty of parks for children to roam about in.  The small town of Arrezo is well know for its Etruscan origins.  It is a beautiful hilltop town and is produces the most beautiful gold jewellery in Italy.

Approximately an hour's drive away is Lago Trasimeno with its beautiful beaches and warm lake.  You can rent bicycles or just relax on the beach whilst the children are playing.  Alternatively you can head off to the coast which is only 1 ½ hours drive away.  Italian beaches tend to be very well organised (like those on the Cote d’Azure) with sunbeds, showers and cafes - so ideal for families.

On a local level there is plenty to do: great food is to be found almost everywhere with a fantastic local restaurant serving fresh pasta, that can be taken back to the house if you wish.  A few moments drive away in the village of Caprese Michelangelo there is a wonderful restaurant which serves an amazing typical Italian Sunday lunch. Then there are the local markets towns of Anghiari and Sansapolcro with a never-ending supply of local restaurants and hand made ice cream counters (all absolutely thrilled to welcome your children).

There are plenty of walks around the property; you can take a stroll around the wooded hillside paths around the stone-walled terraced fields and hazelnut orchards which lead down to wild grass and flower meadows olive, cypress and walnut trees.  Alternatively if you visit in the autumn, go out chestnut collecting and take them home to roast in the chestnut roaster!  You may even see a wild boar roaming about or spot the deers running in the fields.

If food is the one thing that is guaranteed to get you excited, where better than Tuscany to indulge yourself in fantastic local produce?  There are events all year round that revolve around some of the most stunning produce that Italy has to offer, including wine tasting, mushroom and truffle hunting and local cooking lessons.
