What we think…
We would come here like a shot!  This house has been stunningly restored to a level that retains both the historic features of this former farmhouse with smart design and clever interior details.  That, combined with the true sense that you have escaped and found a little corner where the problems of the world simply do not exist makes Casa Alexa a special place to holiday.  Moreover this is a place where quality family time can be the priority and that you can completely slow down the pace of life.

The layout of this house makes it ideal for one, two or even three families holidaying together or perhaps several generations of the same family enjoying quality time together?

Inside…
One of the most notable features of this house is that from every single window there are truly fabulous views to enjoy.  This house has 360 degree aspects which not only take in the dramatic countryside around but also include the picture postcard view of the hilltop village of Penna San Giovanni.  As with many houses of this period, each room has two or more windows meaning that you are never far from a stunning vista!

Inside this house much care and attention has been devoted to providing high quality accommodation in a spectacular setting.  Downstairs, the spacious proportions of this former ‘cantina’ or barn for the cows has been converted on one side into a large and airy open plan sitting room and dining room and on the other into a modern stylish kitchen, utility room and pantry.   The scalloped ceiling and exposed stone walls are joined by terracotta tiles on the floor, a wood-burning stove that fuels the under-floor heating on this floor, and modern, stylish furniture, bringing this house bang up to date!  The adjacent dining room provides a great indoor space in which to eat ‘en-famiglia’.

The kitchen is a perfect example of where new and old have been successfully blended together.  The stainless steel units and appliances work well against the exposed stone wall, high wooden beam ceilings and terracotta floor tiles.  The traditional open fire provides an opportunity to practice cooking the regional speciality of grilled meat over coals ‘alla brace’, as well as being a welcome heat source in the colder months.  Practically, there is plenty of workspace, a large pantry and all the mod cons that you take for granted at home.

The location of the kitchen means that you are never far from the action as there are two sets of full height double doors leading out into the garden.  One set leads out onto a covered terraced area with outdoor table and chairs whilst the other leads out onto another seating area that enjoys the natural shade of the trees – a shady place for children to play happily outside.

Where practicality is concerned, the ground floor also has a separate utility room, entrance hall, cloakroom and loo.

The gated stairs lead up to family sitting room at first floor level which is an ideal place to play games, relax and read or chill out in front of the large flat screen TV.  Double doors lead out onto a spectacular roof terrace which is arguably the best place to enjoy the views.  It was here that we enjoyed watching the ‘pastore’ or shepherd peacefully herd his sheep down the valley.  Three large bedrooms on this floor all have modern en-suite shower rooms with a loo,  and basin.  The fittings and fixtures are very modern and you can see that great thought has been put in to their design. These rooms can be used as doubles or as twins depending on the configuration of your party.

A further floor upstairs houses a family suite of rooms: the master bedroom with a large and spacious en suite bathroom and seperate shower, as well as two further adjoining bedrooms, one with twin beds and another with bunks and children's play room/bedroom.  Ideal for parents and kids, or all the kids together!

Outside...
As one sweeps down (and up!) the private gravel track, one gets a real sense of ‘getting away from it all’ and we certainly felt a surge of excitement as we glimpsed the house nestled down in the valley.  The house stands alone with no worries about passing traffic, people or any of the other concerns that have come to worry modern parents.  The garden is a mix of lawns and terraces with outdoor play equipment for the children and an enclosed pool which will appeal to adults and children alike.  Needless to say the views, even from the enclosed pool itself, are remarkable.

Note: the white lane that serves as the drive up to the property is a mix of laid tarmac and track which is hilly.

Beyond the garden, it is short walk down to the river where you can walk in the shade of the trees, paddle in the shallows or follow the old salt route along a heritage trail.  If you’re feeling energetic, you could even trek up the hill to local restaurant 'Tre Querce '– you’ll certainly work up an appetite on the way! (Children’s backpack advised)

And beyond...
Le Marche has really secured a place in our hearts as being a corner of Italy where you can enjoy a slower pace of life, eat fantastic food (see our restaurant reviews) and really have the time to enjoy family life in a country where children are adored.

Mountains and coast
With the mountains and beaches on the doorstep, there is plenty to do here in every season.  Throughout the winter months this is a great place to take to the slopes for a morning of sledging or skiing, and in the summer the beaches are a fabulous place to while away a day with your family.

The Sibillini Mountains and the Adriatic coast are each only 30 minutes away and provide a wonderful contrast in terms of days out.  We were told time and time again about how fantastic the beaches are for children with their enclosed play areas, safe beaches and fantastic (family friendly) fish restaurants.

Le Marche is abound with small local factories which specialise in the production of great quality leather goods – shoes and handbags most importantly - and are more than happy for you to visit.  It is here that one gets a peek at techniques that have been used for many years by very skilled crafts men and women. Essentially, the factories sell the products as well, so a little trip to see can end up with the inclination to buy! There are many of these factories dotted around the region but we visited one that was situated in the village of Penna San Giovanni.

Local hilltop villages that surround this beautiful country house are Sant Angelo in Pontano, Falerone and Penna San Giovanni and are each approximately 10 minutes in the car.  The restaurant Pippo e Gabriella in Sant Angelo is particularly family friendly and serves wonderful pasta!  Bar ‘Terrazza Belvedere’ in Penna San Giovanni has a great terrace overlooking the outdoor children’s play area and provides a wonderful spot to relax on a summer’s evening.  In the local villages you can find restaurants, pizzerias, bars, coffee shops, butchers, bakers, supermarkets, pharmacies and banks so although you feel far away from another soul you are always close for the things that you will inevitably need during your stay.

The picturesque towns of Amandola and Sarnano, with its thermal spa and luxury health spa are thirty minutes away.  The sophisticated county town of Macerata, with its renowned open-air opera and boutique shopping, and the vibrant Ascoli Piceno, with its splendid architecture and Le Marche’s most beautiful piazza, are both less than an hour by car.
